ProDOG Obedience Work

What is a Obedience Training?

Learning a solid obedience regimen is vital to success in more advanced training later. There are two phases of obedience work. Phase one is teahing the handler how to effectively give commands, reinforcement and corrections.

Generally, unless the dog is being trained as a service/assist dog, we teach down, sit, stay, heel and recall to finish...on leash or in a positive control work environment. Basic obedience lays the foundation for transitioning to off-leash work which is completed in Advanced Obedience.

What is Advanced Obedience?

Advanced Obedience picks up where we leave off in Basic work.

Advanced Obedience concentrates on all off-leash control and distractions.

In Advanced Obedience we also introduce a tactical agility regimen and combine the off-leash work with overcoming challenges while under control and in command.

We also do quite a bit of work on long distance and out-of-sight downstays with distractions which, again, is a vital foundational skill that is very useful when going into public places, and moving into either protection work or scent detection/tracking.

Obedience I The cost for obedience I (Basic) is $950. and includes 4 weeks of intensive training. Certificates are awarded for successful completion. All work is done on-leash using motivational methodology as a primary training technique.

Obedience II The cost for Obedience II (advanced) is $1100 and includes 6 weeks of intensive training. This includes all of the basic command and control structures (sit, stay, down, heel, recall, and finish) but it is done off-leash using either verbal commands or hand signals. Successful testing on Obedience I is required to participate in Obedience II.

Behavior Problems Behavior Problems are usually a result of poor foundational obedience work or unresolved drive. Problem Bahavior evaluations are $175. plus travel costs. Usually a trainer can either resolve the problem during the evaluation or suggest a training regimen that will allow the dog to succeed in overcoming the issue(s).

Puppy Training Puppy Training is a two session seminar which includes evaluation for working applications, nutrition, and starting the pup down the right road to a happy life with you and/or your family. Puppy Training is not a pre-requisite to other ProDOG programs, but it is worth your time and money to get your pup going in the right direction. Puppy Training 101 is $250. for two 2 hour sessions.

Your obligation in the equation. Service / assist dogs are trained almost exclusively by the trainer. That is not the usually training scenario. With non-disabled people, the trainer instructs the handler/owner on the ways to work with the dog and acheive positive results. It requires a dedication to training every single day. Repetitive conditioning is the key and practice is the only way it works. Training dogs for the disabled, requires that we train the dog and then teach the handler on methods of working with the dog after training.

ProDOG's Service / Assist / Obedience Service / Assist Obedience differs from Basic Obedience in some ways in that we start your dog on the basics to assist work along with the controls normally associated with Obedience training. Many times our clients are physically disabled, so we need to teach the same skills in a different way. For instance, if you walk with hand devices or are wheelchair bound, the dog needs to do the obedience around the crutches or wheelchair. It is a different training paradigm then strictly Basic Obedience, and is a bit more time consuming. The cost for this assistance obedience is $2750.
